Function and purpose

This correspondence file series documents the policy and administration of the Department of Defence between 1967 -1973.  A1945 is the previous series recorded between 1957-1974.  Its content reflects the main functions of the Department including the following areas:  defence policy, joint service matters, finance, supply, production programs and capacity, disposition and organisation of the DefenceForces, higher appointments to the latter, weapons and equipment, defence research and development. Subjects treated under these groupings include appointments, departmental facilities, civil defence, relations with other countries, conditions of service, disarmament, economic warfare, furniture and fittings, information, medical and dental, press and publicity, recruiting, repairs and maintenance, security, statistics, treaties and agreements, war crimes and welfare.

As such, content of the files includes:

·        Employment Overseas of Members of the Women’s Services

·        Development of Port of Darwin 1968-1971

·        Policy of Procurement of Defence Equipment Overseas

·        Tertiary Education at the Service Colleges- Study of Possible Integration 1970-1971

Administrative content of files includes:

·        Development of the Royal Military College – Duntroon, New Works etc 1961-1972

·        Higher Army Appointments from August 1962

·        Re-engagement in the Services (1968-1971)
