This series consists of a presentation set of two facsimile manuscripts of
novels by Jose Rizal (1861-1896), one of the leaders of the 'Propaganda
Movement' in The Philippines. The first novel, Noli Me Tangere, concerns
Filipino sufferings under Spanish rule and was originally published in 1887.
The second novel, El Filibusterismo, appeared in 1891 and is an attack
on the religious orders. Both works are in Spanish and became central to the
Filippino opposition to Spain.
The facsimiles were published by the Jose Rizal National Centennial
Commission in 1961. Each of the two black leather-bound volumes, titles
embossed, are personally inscribed 'Oct 25, 1966. To Prime Minister Harold
Holt, Australia. Best wishes, F E Marcos.' They were presented in a gold
satin-lined wooden box, with a brass plate inscription 'From The President of
the Philippines and Mrs Ferdinand E Marcos', at the conclusion of the Seven
Nation Summit Conference in Manila on that date.
