Function and purpose
This series comprises one 8-page election pamphlet
encouraging voters in the Federal seat of Flinders, Victoria, to vote for the
Nationalist Candidate, Capt. S. M. Bruce MC, in the general election to be held
on Saturday 13 December 1919. Stanley
Melbourne Bruce had held the seat of Flinders since a by-election on 11 May
1918. The front page of the pamphlet
features a photograph of Bruce in military uniform while the text proclaims
Bruce’s support of the Nationalist Government led by Prime Minister
Hughes. Bruce outlines his views on a
wide range of issues including the wartime policies of the Hughes Government,
repatriation, the Labor Party, the Farmers’ Union, industrial unrest, high
prices, the ‘living wage’, old age and sickness provisions, unemployment,
profit sharing, British immigration, soldier settlement, postal, telegraphic
and telephone facilities, price fixing, markets, secondary industries, national
health, defence and national finance.
