Function and purpose

This series comprises one 8-page election pamphlet encouraging voters in the Federal seat of Flinders, Victoria, to vote for the Nationalist Candidate, Capt. S. M. Bruce MC, in the general election to be held on Saturday 13 December 1919.  Stanley Melbourne Bruce had held the seat of Flinders since a by-election on 11 May 1918.  The front page of the pamphlet features a photograph of Bruce in military uniform while the text proclaims Bruce’s support of the Nationalist Government led by Prime Minister Hughes.  Bruce outlines his views on a wide range of issues including the wartime policies of the Hughes Government, repatriation, the Labor Party, the Farmers’ Union, industrial unrest, high prices, the ‘living wage’, old age and sickness provisions, unemployment, profit sharing, British immigration, soldier settlement, postal, telegraphic and telephone facilities, price fixing, markets, secondary industries, national health, defence and national finance.
