Function and purpose
This series consists of one file containing correspondence
between Stanley Melbourne Bruce and Prime Minister William Morris Hughes in
1921 and 1923. Most of the correspondence
is from Hughes to Bruce except for a transcribed copy of one letter from Bruce
to Hughes. The correspondence dating
from 1921 concerns Hughes’ offer to Bruce of a position in the Government
(initially Hughes was offering Bruce the portfolio of Trade and Customs), a
censure motion against the Government by the Country Party’s Earle Page and the
Labor Party, and decisions and changes in Cabinet. Also included is an informal letter from Hughes dated 21 December
1921 summoning Bruce to Government House for swearing in as Federal
Treasurer. The 1923 correspondence
concerns the formation and composition of a coalition government by the
Nationalist and Country Parties to be led by Bruce. Two short undated handwritten notes by Hughes concern summoning Bruce
for a meeting (probably dating from 1921) and Bruce forming an administration (probably
dating from 1923).
