Series A1489 contains one file of typescript copies of
speeches and articles written by Prime Minister Stanley Melbourne Bruce from
late 1923 to early 1924. The speeches
were delivered both in Australia and in Britain during Bruce’s visit for the
1923 Imperial Conference. A covering
page listing the contents of the file has been added later, probably by Bruce’s
private secretary, Mrs Nora Roberts.
The file includes a speech delivered at the Annual Dinner of
the British National Farmers Union on ‘Empire Agriculture’, 24 October 1923;
press articles concerning British agriculture, October 1923; an article for
publication in “Nineteenth Century and After” entitled ‘Imperial Preference’,
February 1924; a speech on the League of Nations, 19 February 1924; a speech
made on return to Australia from the Imperial Conference, 1924; and a speech to
the Adelaide Chamber of Commerce, 20 May 1924.
In these speeches and articles, Stanley Melbourne Bruce
sets out his views on various issues including cooperation between British and
Dominion farmers, foreign imports, Australian protectionism, the principles of
Free Trade, the interaction between British, Dominion, European and American
markets, the cost of living, the Imperial Conference and Imperial Economic
Conference of 1923, international relations, the ‘White Australia’ policy,
