Function and purpose
This
series consists of one leather bound volume of press cuttings relating to Prime
Minister Stanley Melbourne Bruce’s attendance at the Imperial and Economic
Conferences held in London in late 1923.
The press cuttings are taken from a wide range of British (and some
French) papers including The Times, Daily Mail, Daily Sketch, Westminster
Gazette, Evening News, Glasgow Herald, Evening Standard, Aberdeen
Press, Yorkshire Post, Newcastle Journal, Sheffield Telegraph, Manchester
Guardian, Birmingham Post, Pall Mall Gazette and Bystander. The press articles concern the official business of the conferences
and associated social engagements. A
number of articles focus particularly on Mr or Mrs Bruce, including Prime
Minister Bruce’s views on Australia’s place in the Empire, Imperial
organisation, Empire Defence and Inter-Imperial Trade. Mr Bruce himself is also described in some
detail with particular attention paid to his British connections, his Cambridge
education and his WWI service in the Home Army. Mrs Bruce is featured in several articles mainly focusing on her
promotion of Australia as an emigration destination for British women. A number of newspaper photographs of Mr and
Mrs Bruce, both individually and with others, are featured as well as local
press reports on Bruce’s visits to provincial centres after the conference.
