Series note
A1421 consists of four folders of chronologically arranged official and personal correspondence between RG Casey and Stanley Melbourne Bruce for the period January 1933 to July 1938. During this time, Casey was Assistant Federal Treasurer (1933-35) and Federal Treasurer (1935-39) while Bruce was Honorary Minister in London (January 1932-October 1933) and then Australian High Commissioner to Britain, which he remained until 1945. The correspondence primarily concerns Commonwealth revenue and expenditure, overseas balance of payments, loan arrangements, the Loan Council and State-Federal financial arrangements, and various aspect of Commonwealth monetary policy. Much of the correspondence is marked 'private and confidential' and often takes the form of Casey forwarding memoranda to Bruce for confidential comment and advice. Other topics touched on include Australian and British political news, Australian Cabinet arrangements and appointment of senior public servants, Bruce's activities with the League of Nations, Ministerial visits to Britain, Victorian Centenary celebrations in 1934 and the ownership and administration of Canton and Hull Islands.
