Function and purpose
All aliens travelling to Australia were required to fill out
and complete Customs form A. 42. which was a personal statement form requiring
certain information about the person and their intended stay in Australia. When
a ship arrived or plane landed a list of passenger who submitted these form was
made. This series contains the form collected during 1939. The lists include
the persons names, nationality and the date of arrival along with the ship or
flight they travelled on and the place of arrival.
System of arrangement and control
A single number was imposed at item level by the National
Archives of Australia. The lists were grouped into months of the year. The file
numbers correspond to the month of the year.
Finding aids
All items in the custody of the National Archives of
Australia as at May 2003 have been entered onto the item level database.
Series history
This
series was originally transferred into archival custody as CP181/1/1. Work
conducted by the National Archives of Australia in 2002 revealed two types of
records. The first being the Personal statements, which was converted to CRS
A12508 (Transfer Job No. 2002/5147625). The second being lists of passengers
who arrived during 1939, which was converted to CRS A12682 (Transfer Job No.
2003/).
