Function and purpose
This series consists of 124 files of proceedings of Military Courts convened for the trial of war prisoners charged with offences committed while under detention.
In accordance with National Security (POW) Regulations the files comprising this series were passed to Attorney General's Department for scrutiny and retention for the duration of the war and six months thereafter. Their destruction was not carried out at the end of this period, however, as it was decided that their value for reference purposes, particularly in regard to the screening of ex-POW's seeking access to Australia as immigrants, qualified them for an extended period of retention.
