Summary heading
Function and purpose
This series consists of negative films which are
early aerial survey photography of Australia and are directly
connected with the work of Dr W.G. Woolnough on the Aerial
Geological Survey of Australia. Whilst the films are mostly of northern Australia e.g. Broome, Longreach,
Nullabor Plain, Exmouth Gulf,
Melville Island, Darwin, Alice Springs, Wave
Hill and Fitzroy Crossing there are also some films of other locations e.g.
west coast Tasmania and Adelaide.
In 1927 Dr Woolnough became
geological adviser to the Commonwealth of Australia, a ‘temporary’ position he
held until 1941. In this position Dr Woolnough
encouraged the use of aerial survey photography and, under his direction, in 1932 the RAAF undertook an extensive aerial
survey for geological purposes. The majority of films in this series are of
aerial survey photography undertaken in 1932.
