Descriptive note
This item consists of a single item: a proclamation by Sir
Douglas Mawson on 18 February 1931. The proclamation asserts the sovereignty of
HM King George V and his heirs and successors over that part of the Antarctic
mainland and adjacent islands situated between meridia
138 degrees and 60 degrees east of Greenwich and south of Latitude 64 degrees
as far as the South Pole. This document forms the basis of Australian
sovereignty over the Australian Antarctic Territory.
For preservation reasons, the
original of this item cannot be issued to the Reading Room. Researchers
