Summary heading
Revised control symbol
Descriptive note
This file had the same control symbol (915/7/1 PART 2) as
another file in the same series (barcode 546041). This duplication was probably the result of top numbering. As the CRS A1838 series note states ‘It was
intended that every file should be top numbered but many of the closed parts
retained their old numbers and were transferred under those numbers to
Australian Archives. The old numbers were, in some cases, reallocated many
years later to new files with different subjects’. In this case the earlier files date from 1963
and concern the UN and Buddhists in Vietnam whereas this file and its part 1
concern the UN and North Vietnam.
It was decided to add an A suffix to distinguish this file because
its Part 1 has an A suffix added to the control symbol on the file cover and in
the consignment list (A1838/343) it is also listed with an A suffix. As well, the Nth Vietnam files are the later
files. The fact that someone had added
a suffix to the file cover of part 1 indicated that the duplicate file number
was recognised but was not followed through to Part 2. Therefore, we have some
basis for adding an A suffix to this 2nd part.
