Personalities - Literature - Rosina Ruth Park (Mrs D'Arcy Niland) was born in Auckland, New Zealand - At the outbreak of World War II she had a staff appointment on the Auckland Star and during the war was thrown into general newspaper reporting - In 1941 she came to Sydney and later married D'Arcy Niland and began her career as a freelance writer - When her husband went outback as a shearer she followed him, taking various jobs as shearer's cook and as offsider - On their return to Sydney in 1943 the Nilands, desperate for accommodation, rented rooms in a tenement in Surry Hills - Out of her experience of life in that neighbourhood Ruth Park wrote the prize winning novel, The Harp in the South and its sequel, Poor Man's Orange CATEGORY: photograph FORMAT: b&w negative TYPE: cellulose acetate STATUS: preservation material
